First ever Game Jam

This was my first ever game jam, and done with my brother who is couped up with me. I'll start by saying that we are proud of what we have done in three days, and a bit baffled by how many issues we missed.

The brainstorming started in a very dark place. We loved the idea of being an accidental enemy, an agent who acts normally, or even for the good, but ultimately causes death and destruction. Out first idea was an established scientist infected by the disease he was researching, and his students are trying to save him based on his previous work. He can't communicate with them, they think he's delirious or being too cynical, so must sneak around and find a way to sacrifice himself before he loses control and kills everyone. It got very dark very fast, so we abandoned that after a good day of progress.

We pivoted to a completely new idea, where you control a police officer who is trying to do good, but jsut can't. Like an embodiment of those days you have sometimes, where nothing goes right. You are your own enemy, and in the eyes of the park-goers, you are the enemy of peace, compassion and listening to stories.

We ran out of time to add in all the things we wanted, so there is only really one win condition which might be a little hard to find.

In the process of rushing out the end, we realised how messed up the water shader is, how badly I made the sitting on benches procedure, a few spelling mistakes and how annoying the Unity navmesh can be (seriously, wth). So as the people in our park randomly blip up and down or sit hovering 30cm above the bench (or underneath it), please know it wasn't our intention.

I think that our inexperience in gamedev caused a lot of time wasted, I for example got caught up for a few hours making a unity terrain asset that caused horrible performance issues, and my brother spent a long time trying to stop halloumi and mayonnaise sandwiches from breaking the inventory.

Some of my favourite things about the game - some of the dialogue with random NPCs, the magician's magic trick, being thoroughly unable to do something right with the sandwich kid, the darkness of some of my brother's quest ideas.

Overall, a positive experience. Definitely a good way to spend some of the time in lockdown, and I feel I have learned a lot about myself, and maybe a little about using Unity/Blender!

Cheers,

Dan
